Lecture 1: Networking Basics

WHAT IS NETWORK?

A collection of computers, servers, network devices, peripherals, or various other devices connected to one another allowing for data to be shared and used.

There are many types of computer networks, including:

Local Area Network (LAN): The computers are geographically close together (that is, in the same building).

Wide Area Network(WAN): The computers are farther apart and are connected by telephone lines or radio waves.

Metropolitan Area Network(MAN): A data network designed for a town or city.

WHAT IS INTERNETWORK?

Internetworking is the practice of connecting a computer network with other networks through the use of gateways that provide a common method of routing information packets between the networks. The resulting system of interconnected networks is called an internetwork, or simply an internet. Internetworking is a combination of the words inter ("between") and networking
